A Roots blower is a positive displacement pump commonly used to move air or gas. It works by trapping a fixed volume of air between two meshing rotors, which rotate in opposite directions, and then discharging it at a higher pressure. The device is named after its inventors, Philander and Francis Roots.

WORKING PRINCIPLE
Step | Description |
---|---|
1. Rotor Design | The blower consists of three intermeshing lobed rotors (typically in a figure-eight shape), which rotate inside a casing without touching each other. |
2. Air Intake | As the rotors rotate in opposite directions, they trap a fixed volume of air between the lobes and the casing, drawing air in through the intake port. |
3. Compression | The trapped air is moved toward the discharge side. As the rotors continue rotating, the volume between the lobes decreases, compressing the air. |
4. Air Discharge | Compressed air is expelled through the outlet port at a higher pressure. The constant flow rate is maintained despite pressure changes due to positive displacement. |
